Peak Control - Capacity Tariff

In short: FlexiO continuously monitors and manages your monthly peak tariff, a major cost driver on your energy bill. By learning your typical consumption patterns and making real-time steering decisions, it keeps your peak as low as possible—unless strategic increases offer a financial advantage.

Why peak monitoring?

As mentioned in the previous chapter, one of the key external costs is your monthly peak tariff. Since this cost is based on your highest energy usage in a 15-minute window during the month, it plays a major role in your total energy bill.

FlexiO is fully aware of this. It tracks your peak tariff and incorporates it into every forecast and steering decision. The goal? Keep your monthly peak as low as possible—unless there’s a strategic reason not to. Let’s break it down with some examples to clarify:

💡 Knowing Your Average Monthly Peak

Over time, FlexiO learns your average peak. For example, if your monthly peak is usually around 4kW because you charge your EV at 3.7kWh, FlexiO will aim to stay at or below that peak.

There’s no point aiming for a 2.5kW peak if you’re exceeding it every time you charge your car —that only creates unnecessary constraints.

🎯 Setting a Custom Peak Goal

Want more control? You can ask your installer to set a custom peak limit. FlexiO will then adjust its strategy to align with that threshold. If it’s not setted up, FlexiO will choose it’s ideal monthly peak goal (in most cases, we recommend the last option).

🧠 Smart Steering

Even if your EV charger isn’t compatible with FlexiO, the system recognises their unique consumption patterns (same for eg. heatpumps). It won’t try to charge your car with the battery, since it’s simply not possible and smart to do so. Instead, FlexiO focuses on managing the consumption on top of your EV, to keep the month peak as low as possible.

📈 When Increasing Your Peak Actually Makes Sense

Surprisingly, sometimes it’s smarter to raise your peak—especially at the start of the month. Why?

Let’s say it’s the 2nd of the month and grid balancing prices are extremely high. FlexiO may decide to exceed your normal peak to take advantage of those high rewards. And since your peak has now increased anyway, you’ve unlocked more flexibility for the rest of the month.

Be aware that FlexiO always will calculate the cost of increasing the monthly peak, and only will do in there is an advantage to do so!
